The Christmas Holidays saw
the successful conclusion to the 2005 circuit.
With events having been held throughout the year
at the Nottingham Tennis Centre, the top 8 players
in each age group qualified for the year end Masters.
Two records were set in 2005. 11 year old Emelia Box qualified in all three age groups (18&Under / 15&Under / 11&Under), whilst at 7 years old Marcus Walters became the youngest ever qualifier for the Masters.
Over two days of competition, the 11&Unders were the first to perform. In what was a busy two days for Emelia Box, she started off in style by beating Lynsey Cover 6/4 in the 11&U Girls final. Sheffield's Edmund Burke remained unbeaten during 2005, by winning the Boy's 11&Unders, with a 6/2 victory over Mark Eastall.
The 15&Under Girls final saw a very close match, with Poppy O'Shea edging out Emelia Box 7/6 (8/6 in the tie break). Mansfield's Niral Nana, drafted in as a reserve two days before the event, ironically proved to be too strong for the rest of the 15&Under Boys field, beating Wollaton's Anton Peterkin, who had looked strong when qualifying from his group.
The second day was the turn of the 18&Unders, with 13 year old Luke Smith qualifying for the Masters. In fact the Wollaton youngster went all the way to the final before succumbing to 17 year old James Smith 7/5. Whilst Emelia Box competing in her third event over the two days, certainly held her own against the older opposition, finishing second in her group. The Girls final was contested between Jenny Walker and Poppy O'Shea, with Poppy winning her second title in two days with a 6/2 final victory.
The 2006 circuit starts during February half term, with a change in age groups to 11&Under / 15&Under / 18&Under. For further information contact Richard Joyner at the Tennis Centre on 0115 9150050.
